General information: The Emperor scorpion is the largest species of scorpion in the world. The Emperor scorpion can reach a maximum size of eight inches (but most average four to six inches). The average lifespan is 5-8 yrs, with females generally living longer. They are found primarily in in the countries of Togo and Ghana. This species of scorpion is easily maintained in captivity. When handling the scorpion it is recommended that you scoop them from below, through the substrate. They can also be picked up by the stinger. But this method is not recommended. As with most arachnids…people who are anaphylactic or allergic to insects stings, should not handle emperor scorpions. The sting of an emperor scorpion is very mild and similar to a bee sting.
Housing/ lighting: Emperor scorpions are one of the few species that can actually be housed communally, as long as there is sufficient visual barriers. Emperors should be kept on a moderately moist bedding (reptile bark, forest mix, etc.). They should be provided with a shallow bowl of water and the enclosure should be misted several times a week. They require no special lighting. The ideal temperature for this species is 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Feeding: Emperor scorpion should be fed an appropriate sized meal 1-2 times a week. Emperor scorpions will readily feed on anything they can over power an kill (crickets, mealworms, wax worms, pinkie mice etc.) Fresh water in a shallow bowl should be provided at all times.
