Species: Goliath Bird Eater Tarantula ( Theraphosa blondi)
Care Level: Advanced
Place of Origin: Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Brazil Size: Up to 12”!!!! males slightly smaller
General information: The Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula is a large, aggressive, and somewhat advanced species of tarantula to take care of. It is not recommended for beginners who have limited experience with aggressive tarantulas. This species when aggravated/ disturbed with eradicate irritating hairs. These hairs are similar to fiber glass, and can cause moderate to severe irritation. In severe cases respiratory issues, and temporary blindness. One of the cool things about this species is one of there unique defenses. When disturbed they will emit a loud hissing sound! OH and this species loves to bite!!!
Housing/ lighting: Due to this species large size they require a larger enclosure then most species of tarantulas. A 10 to 15 gallon tank will sufficiently hold this species. This species also enjoys to be reclusive, so it is a good idea to provide a burrow or half log. The Goliath Bird Eater also requires a higher level of humidity then most species, 80%-90%. The temperature should be kept between 70-85 Fahrenheit. We recommended one of three types of bedding for this species: a rainforest blend, bark, or vermiculite. All three of these beddings are excellent at holding moisture. Also with this species it is a good idea to provide daily misting.
Feeding: Big spider= big food. Feeding the Goliath Bird Eater more then makes up for there grumpy aggressive behavior. Young bird eater can easily be maintained on crickets and mealworms. Adults will also eat crickets and mealworms. But they will also feed on large roaches, snakes, frogs, lizards, mice, and of course small birds.
